Understanding the 5 Stages of IVF – A Simple Guide for Couples

In the present era, most couples struggle to conceive. Luckily, science has improved significantly in the context of fertility. One of the notable improvements is IVF (In Vitro Fertilization). IVF is an easily available and successful treatment option that has made millions of couples realize their dream of having kids.

At Ayushman Infertility Centre, Dwarka, we ensure the IVF process is simple, clear, and motivating. If you are considering your options or already contemplating taking treatment, understanding the IVF process step by step can ease your tension and allow you to make the best decisions.

Let us now observe the 5 steps of IVF in detail.

Step 1: Ovarian Stimulation

The IVF procedure begins with ovarian stimulation. Typically, the woman will release one egg per menstrual cycle. In IVF, though, the objective is to get more than a single egg to increase the odds of success.

For this, fertility drugs (hormone shots) are taken for 8–14 days. At our Dwarka fertility clinic, there are regular ultrasound checks, as well as blood tests, during these days to monitor egg growth and hormone levels. Once the eggs have matured, a trigger shot is administered to prepare them for retrieval.

Stage 2: Egg Retrieval (Ovum Pick-Up)

Approximately 34 to 36 hours after the trigger shot, egg retrieval takes place. This is a painless, non-surgical procedure performed under sedation or general anesthesia. Using ultrasound guidance, a very fine needle is gently inserted through the vaginal wall to collect the eggs from the ovaries.

On the same day, the semen sample is provided by the male partner, which is then processed in our lab to select the healthiest sperm.

Stage 3: Fertilization and Embryo Development

This is the most critical phase – fertilization. The sperm and eggs collected are combined in a laboratory dish. Occasionally, especially when there are fewer sperm, one sperm is inserted into an egg directly through a process called ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection).

The eggs that have been fertilized (embryos at this point) are well monitored for the next 3 to 5 days. At Ayushman Infertility Centre, Dwarka, our embryo experts utilize advanced technology to select the healthiest embryo(s) for transfer.

Stage 4: Embryo Transfer

3 or 5 days from now, the best quality embryo is selected for uterine transfer. It is an easy, painless procedure that takes a few minutes. The embryo is implanted into the uterus through a thin tube known as a catheter. Sometimes, embryos are frozen and transferred in a reset cycle.

After the embryo transfer, the woman is put on medication to maintain the uterine lining. This is typically the most emotionally stressful period since couples have to wait to see if the embryo implants properly.

Stage 5: Pregnancy Test

10-14 days after the embryo transfer, the pregnancy is tested by a blood test. If the test is positive, an ultrasound is scheduled in 2-3 weeks to confirm heartbeat and normal growth of the baby.

If the result is unfavorable, don’t lose hope. IVF can take more than one cycle to succeed. We treat you with care and expert professional advice at every stage of the process at Ayushman Infertility Centre.
